Does a root canal hurt?
This is the myth we hear most. The pain you feel is why you came in, not a result of the treatment. The root canal is what ends it. The session is done under complete local anesthesia where you feel little more than mild pressure, and most patients describe it as close to having an ordinary filling. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles with a simple painkiller.
How many visits does it take?
Many cases finish in a single visit thanks to modern rotary instrumentation. Cases with widespread infection or an abscess may need two or three visits so the canal settles fully before the final seal, and molars with multiple canals take longer than front teeth. We tell you the expected number of visits right after the imaging.
How long does a tooth last after treatment?
A tooth that is treated well and restored properly can stay with you for many years, in some cases for life. The decisive factor isn't the root canal itself but the restoration that follows: a tooth left with a temporary filling, or without a crown when one is needed, is at risk of fracture. Results vary from case to case depending on the tooth's position and how much sound structure remains.
Will I need a crown afterwards?
Not always. Front teeth that have lost only a small amount of structure can be restored with a strong composite filling. Back molars that absorb chewing force, or teeth that have lost a large portion of their structure, are protected from fracture by a crown, which is part of the treatment rather than an optional extra. We tell you which applies to you straight after the examination.
Which is better: a root canal, or extraction and an implant?
The medical rule is simple: nothing replaces your own tooth. As long as enough tooth structure remains to restore and the root is sound, keeping it beats removing it, it preserves the surrounding bone and your natural sense of chewing, and the total cost is usually lower than extraction plus an implant plus a crown. We recommend extraction only when the tooth genuinely can't be restored, and we tell you that plainly.
